About Amy Beckman, LCSW and Northern Virginia Psychotherapy

Amy Beckman, LCSW has been a psychotherapist for 25 years.   Her office is located in a leafy office park in downtown McLean, Virginia.  Ms. Beckman earned her Master’s of Science degree in Social Work from Columbia University in 1988.  She began her career in the field of psychiatric social work at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, working in both the inpatient and outpatient departments of psychiatry.  There she benefited from outstanding post-graduate training by leaders in the field of mental health treatment and research.  Upon moving to northern Virginia she was a clinical social work supervisor for the Inova Health Systems’ HIV/AIDS comprehensive out patient services program from 1992-2000.  Ms. Beckman provided and coordinated a wide range of mental health and substance abuse counseling services.  She provided individual and group therapy, supervisory training, led education workshops and was a critical member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and a member of the Management Team.

In addition to managing her full time solo psychotherapy practice, Ms. Beckman conducts workshops to community based groups on such topics as parenting and various aspects of teen and adult mental health. She also actively volunteers with various organizations in her community – and is on the Executive Board of Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church, Virginia; the region’s largest reform Jewish congregation.

Currently Ms. Beckman enjoys the opportunity to work with a wide variety of clients who seek help for a broad range of mental health challenges. She primarily treats individuals through the life span: teens, young adults and adults. She specializes in mental health problems associated with depression, bi-polar and anxiety disorders as well problems in relationships, parenting, work/life balance, divorce, chronic illness and grief and loss.
