Anxiety Disorder Therapy

“Fear is like a ‘wilderland’ stepping stones or sinking sands.”

~ Joni Mitchell

During my 25 years of practice I have successfully helped individuals recover from anxiety and panic disorders.  I rely on an eclectic model of psychotherapy.  I integrate methods and techniques primarily from the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).  Goals are typically centered on reducing physiological reactivity, eliminating avoidance and compulsive behaviors, and correcting negative or distorted perceptions. We will explore and correct negative self-talk which exacerbates and fuels the subjective experience of anxiety.  Uncovering underlying belief systems that are at the source of worry and fear is an important part of the recovery process.  Learning new strategies for perceiving and coping with life’s daily stressors helps to lessen the negative patterns associated with anxiety and distress. Finding creative and healthful ways to better manage stress is a life long reward of recovery from anxiety and panic.  I also use a biofeedback tool, emWave 2 technology, in my office.  I use this technology to teach my clients how to recognize and reduce physiological symptoms of stress and anxiety. These relaxation and revitalization techniques are practiced in the office and are easily incorporated into daily stress management activity.

Clients often ask questions about psychiatric medications or other forms of treatments for their anxiety disorder.  With proper consents, I will collaborate with your psychiatrist or other health care provider.  If necessary, I will make recommendations for complementary therapies or facilitate referrals to additional health care providers.

Anxiety affects your whole being.  Anxiety is a trio of felt reactions: psychological, physiological, and behavioral.  Anxiety has a profound impact on your emotional state - arousing apprehension, worry, and fears of losing control that can lead to distortions in perceptions and obsessive thoughts.  Physiologically, your body expresses anxiety with shortness of breath, a rapid heart rate, muscle tension, or possibly numbness and queasiness. Most people who live with persistent anxiety rely on avoidance and or compulsive behaviors.  Panic attacks are a severe form of anxiety that can occur often without any trigger: your heart races, your breathing is rapid, you feel as though you’re going to faint. It becomes a vicious circle as you experience the fear of having another panic attack.
